Programs

CASEF Award

The Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair (CASEF) is central Pennsylvania's regional program affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair. Each year, 200 to 400 students in grades seven through twelve exhibit projects in engineering, chemisty, physics, behavioral sciences, environmental science, and biology. IIE gave out four awards this March to exhibitors with industrial engineering themed projects:

Laura Tringali of Hummelstown, PA
Grade 10 at Bishop McDevitt HS
Project involved effective methods for memorizing a random list of unassociated words to achieve the best recall over time. Creating a personal story was the best method, versus creating a fictional story, picture, or pneumonic device.

Annaliese Drechsler of Carlisle, PA
Grade 8 at Lamberton Middle School
Project involved using different colored overlays and timing the reading of a story to see which one was fastest to read. Out of yellow, red, green, and blue, green was best.

Aaron Bloschichak of Mechanicsburg, PA
Grade 8 at St Joseph School
Project showed that by combining two neighboring curbside trash pickup piles into one pile saved a significant amount of time and gasoline by the garbage collectors.Very well presented and used a lot of sound IE principles.

Thomas Meinert of Palmyra, PA
Grade 7 at St Joan of Arc
Project involved measuring temperature retention in four types of cups: Styrofoam, plastic, ceramic and stainless. Stainless was best.

4/29/09: Elizabethtown College Industrial Engineering Senior Presentations & Dinner

IIE Honors Local IE Majors!

It’s that time of the year when “senioritis” is setting in for most college seniors. Unfortunately, for the senior Industrial Engineering majors of Elizabethtown College, there is hardly any time to even think about this. This is because the students are feverishly working on their Senior Engineering Project, which is part of their requirement for graduation.
For all of their hard work, the Lancaster – Harrisburg Chapter of IIE will be holding a dinner in the Seniors’ honor on Wednesday, April 29th. After the dinner the students will present their projects, with interesting topics ranging from ‘Optimizing Operations of a Pre-treatment facility’ to ‘The Use of Minitab to Determine the Source of Product Defect at a Local Company’ to ‘The IIE Arena National Competition’. All IIE members are not only invited, but encouraged to come to this exciting evening!

Please contact Sue Benjamin at 717-534-6512 if you can help out, or if you have any questions.
