CASEF Award

The Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair (CASEF) is central Pennsylvania's regional program affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair. Each year, 200 to 400 students in grades seven through twelve exhibit projects in engineering, chemisty, physics, behavioral sciences, environmental science, and biology. IIE gave out four awards this March to exhibitors with industrial engineering themed projects:

- Kendra Sober of Mechanicsburg, PA
Junior winner
Her project "What is the effect of music on learning" involved learning dances with and without music. (Without music is better).

- Jennifer Summy, Susquenita of Duncannon, PA
Junior winner
Her project "Driven to Distraction", looked at cell phone use, eating, music listening and texting, while trying to remember details of 10 pictures. Cell phone use was most distracting.

- Shannon Straser of Duncannon, PA
"Typing vs. Handwriting" was interesting because she compared a study she did in 2007 and used 90% of the same people to test spelling accuracy. Typing was the better method.

- Laura Tringali of West Hummelstown, PA
"Music and the Mind". She asked 112 students to remember 20 random words, while listening to "lyrical" music they had heard before, lyrical music unknown to them, classical music, and no music. No music was the best.
