CASEF
Award
The Capital Area Science and Engineering
Fair
(CASEF) is central
Pennsylvania's regional
program affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair.
Each year, 200 to 400 students in grades seven through twelve exhibit
projects in engineering, chemisty, physics, behavioral sciences,
environmental science, and biology. IIE gave out four awards in March,
2011
to exhibitors with industrial engineering themed projects:
Alexander Zuckerman, Harrisburg, PA 17110
Alexander's project was titled " How does the material used for
Windmill blades affect the production of Electricity". He is in the
Junior division (8th grade) from Harrisburg Academy. He built a small
windmill using an erector set and tested various materials for the
blades. (Aluminum, Balsa wood, and Lexan). Aluminum was the best.
Pia Alderman, Wormleysburg, PA 17043
Pia's project was "What affect does the number of blades on a wind
turbine have on its efficiency". She is also in the Junior division (7
th grade) from Good Shepherd School. She also built a small wind tunnel
and tested 2, 4, and 8 blade designs with a cowling and without. The
eight blade design was most efficient, even at low wind speeds.
Avery Baltimore, Harrisburg, PA 17103
Avery's project "Sight and Sound make the world go round", was in the
Senior Division. She is a 10th grader at SciTech in Harrisburg. She
looked at auditory and visual presentation of information and short
term memory recall. Visual was better for short term memory retention.
Robert Hume, Carlisle, PA 17013
Robert's project was entitled "Muck to Energy". He is a 12th grader
from Carlisle HS, in the Senior division. He took (benthic) mud samples
from three streams in the Carlisle area, built fuel cells, and measured
the electrical output of each.
