Upcoming Event Descriptions

3/10/2010: Martin's Potato Chip Plant Tour

Started in 1941 by Harry and Ferry Martin, the Martin’s started out part time, making chips for local farmers markets.   A small factory was built in the 1950s, and automatic equipment installed in the 1960s.  In 1971 the Martin’s sold the business to Ken & Sandy Potter in 1971.  In 1971 the business had one delivery truck and the main seller was BBQ Waffle chips.  About 1974, kettle cook'd potato chips were introduced.  The company grew rapidly in the 70s and 80s, and by 1990 there were over 30 route trucks making deliveries.  Building expansions occurred in 1979, 1984, 1990, and 2001, with popcorn production started in 1993.   Today Martin’s has 64 delivery routes and several major distributors, covering the middle section of PA, most of MD, and parts of Virginia.  The current production facility covers about 60,000 sq ft, is capable of producing about 3,000 lbs per hour of potato chips and popcorn combined.

4/14/2010: Geeks and Geezers

Baby Boomers are lingering in the workplace.  Gen Xers are growing impatient waiting to acquire additional responsibilities and ascend into leadership.  Gen Ys are knocking at HR’s door in record numbers.  And technology, including social media, is transforming the mode and pace of communication.  This convergence of young, old, and technology is simultaneously creating opportunity and crisis.

From cell phones and texting to religion and manners, almost 8 in 10 people believe there is a major difference in the point of view of younger and older Americans.

During this presentation, participants will learn from workforce management expert/author Ira S. Wolfe about generational trends that are changing the way organizations will do business.
