Volunteer opportunity advertised by Community Outreach Director

Volunteers,John McCormick and I attended a meeting with the Harrisburg School District to discuss their GEARUP tutoring program on Monday, August 28.  The Harrisburg School District provides tutoring to students in grades 7 through 12.  The program is funded by a College and Career Awareness Grant that provides an hourly wage of $20 to tutors.  Volunteers are also welcome, and they have a few of these people returning for the upcoming school year.

All tutoring will be conducted within the school walls.  Most of the tutoring will be conducted during school hours.  Some after school tutoring may be needed – anticipated hours 3pm to 4pm.  Tutoring is expected to begin in October.

Anyone interested in this program, please email Sandra Patsolic spatsoli@hbgsd.k12.pa.us (717-703-4108) with the following information:

  1. The grade level you would like to tutor
  2. The subjects which you would like to tutor.  List three in order of preference. (do you have a specialty in math, science?)
  3. Availability – days of the week and hours of the day
  4. Geographic preference ( do you mind working in more than 1 school? In the same day?)

After contacting Sandra, clearance forms can be filled out, and a provided physician will perform a TB test.  Additionally, college transcripts will be necessary – unofficial transcripts are fine.

Please feel free to forward this message to your local engineering society and to anyone you think might be interested in participating in this program.

Thanks for your help with this worthwhile program and your continued involvement with local schools and students.
